We Are Not Waiting for Change
This has been a taxing week, one filled with pain, despair and grief. Unfortunately, these are not new feelings, but we can’t stay in that space. We have heard it time and time again, it will be the young people that make and create change, so let’s do it! We cannot ignore injustice when we see it. I have been inspired by a variety of races, cultures and religious groups this week that have wrapped their arms around the black community in support of creating stronger communities, better opportunities and some form of equality. The tragic deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, have been eye-opening, for some, and are bringing people together to listen, to converse and to plan. Plan for change, plan for mobilization, plan for execution. In the meantime, we must continue to support one another emotionally, mentally, and financially and not just on #blackouttuesday (an initiative to go silent on social media, reflect on recent events, stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, and support black owned businesses).
We have found ourselves fighting the same fight our grand and great grandparents fought for us and when I look at my own child’s face, I understand why. Why they fought, why they walked miles marching and picketing and why we must fight and will continue to fight. With these continued tragedies it has again reminded me of just how grateful I am for the blessings that surround me every day, my family. They have kept me sane, grounded and comforted in a time when all I want to do is scream.
I am reminded just how important the simple pleasures are. Just as simple as baby girl playing in the front lawn as her daddy and grandmother spray the water hose at her.
So, here’s some black girl joy as we head into another week, and remember to take the breaks you need, talk about your pain and know that the young people are coming for change with our foot on the gas because we need it NOW! Here’s to us and here’s to those to follow!
If you need ideas as to what you can do, here are some.
