Baby Hairs

Hey Girl, Hey! Happy March! Can we believe it’s March already?!

Whew chile. Time is flying.

This month I thought I would share a few of my favorite things and I’d like to begin with my baby’s hair care routine, the products I’m in love with, how I style her hair, and maintain her healthy little curls.

I like to give y'all the real and the ugly, so let me preface by saying... I HATE DANDRUFF and at 2 months my baby had the nerve to get cradle cap lol. What is cradle cap? Cradle cap is the result of overactive sebaceous gland (excessive oil production by skin gland around hair follicles). It causes your baby to have thick, white, flaky crust in their hair that heavily resembles dandruff. So, again.. with my hate for dandruff —even baby dandruff— I could of died right there on the spot. Ok, I’m being dramatic, but really, Kinsley came out with a head full of soft, beautiful hair all to be ripped away by cradle cap. I mean yall it was on her face, ears, eyebrows –UGH. In hindsight, it didn’t last that long, but it felt like forever and to say I was distressed at the time would not be an exaggeration lol. Since then our hair journey has been beautiful. I have tested and tried a few different products and below I will show our favorites.

I should also preface by saying I am not a dermatologist or cosmetologist, but this is what works for us.

WASH DAY

When it comes to caring for babies hair, less is more. I wash Kinsley’s hair once a week as to not dry out her scalp and hair. Every Tuesday is wash day. Me and my “boodie” turn on some music and have a little fun in the tub. She plays with her letters, the soap bottles and the wash rag and that gives me the opportunity to wash her hair. Shea Moisture Baby Wash & Shampoo with Oat Milk is our favorite. Its light, smells fresh and leaves her hair feeling clean and light. I also love the baby visor that keeps the soap and water out of her eyes because she is not a fan of water in her face.

After drying the hair completely I add a coin size of Curls- So So Fresh Scalp Treatment.

MOISTURIZING

After washing her hair and each morning I add a little bit of moisturizer to Kinsley’s hair. The one’s I love are Curls- Ring Around the Curlies (pictured below) and Mielle Pomegranate & Honey Leave-In Conditioner (pictured below), both made by two Melanin Queens might I add. I love Curls for their dedicated baby line and Mielle is a new fav because it doesn’t leave the curls feeling weighed down.

In the meantime and in between time we use good old fashioned Nana Titi’s go to and favorite, Vaseline. I apply a coin sized amount to my hands and work them into her hair and scalp.

COMBING AND DETANGLING

IMG_6758.JPG

Every night I remove any barrettes and bows and comb her hair thoroughly with my fingers first and then the comb for reinforcements lol. When combing her hair I usually grip it lightly to create a barrier between her scalp and the comb. This helps lessen the tension on her hair. I also give her a little scalp massage, but only if she’s up for it. These days she just wants to run around. Did I tell y’all she’s walking, excuse me running? That’s another blog post, but yes... Sista girl is up and moving, moving. Now back to hair. The hair is then left out for bed. The bonnet days aren’t upon us just yet, but the way this hair is growing.. it'll be sooner than later.

So you know… sis has had a bonnet for a while now, we just don’t need it quite yet.

LET IT BREATHE

As mentioned above, each night I let her hair breathe. Also be sure you’re getting rid of headbands as their heads are growing as we don’t want to cut off any circulation.

Usually on the weekend I don’t add anything to Kinsley’s hair so that it has optimal time to breathe. I usually just let her rock her natural fro curls with a little help from Curls – Ring Around the Curlies Leave In.

I’ve provided a link of the products above in case you want to try them on your baby loves.

And now that I’ve shared our hair routine and some of our favorite products to use, share with me some of yours? What are you using on your babies hair? What are some good products you’ve heard about and or want to try? Do you and your baby use the same products?

As always, thank you for spending time with me.
