Current Hair Care Favorites
If you follow me on social media, you know I post baby girl’s daily hairstyles in my stories. From these daily posts, I’ve been getting a lot of questions regarding Kinsley’s hair, so I thought I’d put together a post sharing all my current hair care favorites for her. Also, probably my most asked question about her hair is….how do I get her to sit still and how often do I wash it? Well, check out our hair care routine here for the latter.
Before we get started, I would be remiss to not say the first and most important part of doing your baby’s hair is PATIENCE.
And now let’s get to my current hair care favorites for Kinsley.
WASH & SHAMPOO
First let me start by saying I don’t like to put a whole lot in Kinsley’s hair. We’re in the toddler days of lots of running arounds and sweating and we only wash her hair every other Tuesday (that’s an update from every Tuesday routine when she was younger). For a clean wash and easy detangle my go to is still Shea Moisture Mango & Carrot Kids Shampoo & Conditioner and Oat Milk & Rice Water Baby Wash & Shampoo. I find Shea Moisture’s shampoo’s leave Kinsley’s hair clean with sweet smell that is not overpowering. They are non-abrasive washes and are at a great price point and can be found at Amazon or your local beauty supply, Target or Walmart. Even after trying out other brands, we always come back to Shea Moisture.
LEAVE IN CONDITIONER
This is an oldie but goodie for us and still one of my all time favorite leave in conditioners, the Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curling Butter Cream. Well, they call it a curl butter, but we use it as a daily moisturizer. I use this daily on her hair as it is light, not leaving her hair feeling weighed down, and has a nice scent and a beautiful shine.
EDGE CONTROL
To lay down her edges we either use my favorite, vaseline or for a stronger hold, we use the Shine n Jam conditioning gel with extra hold. It does the trick and a little bit goes a long way to lay down those baby hairs.
HAIR ACCESSORIES
When styling Kisnley’s hair in pony tails, I use the black Annie rubber bands. They do not tear at her hair and are strong enough to hold her pony’s in place. When removing be careful not to pop them onto your child’s head. We also like to put little barrettes in for special occasions as she’s not allowed to wear these to daycare during the week.
HAIR TOOLS
Speaking of strong hair accessories, for detangling I use a combination of my fingers and the Denman brush ( this is a great tool for curly hair). I always start by wetting her hair with a spray bottle and detangle from the ends of her hair, working my way up while holding the top portion of her hair to minimize any pain. Another tip is to add a little leave in conditioner to the spray bottle , shake and apply as you detangle. Luckily Kinsley is not tender headed and this process is pretty easy for us.
HER ATTENTION
And lastly not but not least, what you may have all been waiting to hear is the key to keeping Kinsley still while I style her hair is - FOOD! I seat her in her high chair and put her breakfast or lunch in front of her and go as quickly as I can before she finishes the plate. I also put on Blues Clues or Sesame Street, but that alone will not keep her attention when doing her hair.
I hope this helped with taming your little’s tresses. The key for me was to try out a few products and see what her hair liked most. My hair is just as curly, but what works for me does not work for her hair and vice versa.
